Well, I started my French class for beginners today. I hope it will be really easy! I took French all through grade, junior, and high school. But that was 12 years ago. I haven’t used French at all since, except for the occasional “Quelle heure est-il?”, “Zut alors!”, “MERDE!”, “Sacre bleu!” and my (in)famous French laugh (Haunh Haunh HAUNH!). And, of course, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Champagne, and Sauvignon! And, as they say, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Just like muscle tone. Off it goes. bye bye.I am not too bad at getting the jist of reading French, and I can almost understand some French if people are speaking slowly enough. But I can’t seem to speak much of it. I guess I feel silly with the accent and intonation stuff.
But, I am determined to be a good student and learn lots of French. I would even like to continue learning to speak French beyond this course. My mom bought me a software program to help me along, it has speech rocognition to help me perfect my accent and even lessons I can download to my MP3 player to take on the road with me. And one of my bosses is bilingual, and he has promised to only speak French to me while I am taking my class. Actually his exact words were “you and me, immersion!” (I’m a little nervous!)
So, wish me luck with French for the next 6 weeks!
